Board of Directors
Karen LaFrance, President
Karen has been Executive Director of two large nonprofit enterprises. Her interest in the Monument and work with the Friends began with the wonderful bird population on the Monument where Arizona Audubon designated an Important Bird Area.
Jim Riggs, Vice-President
Jim has been a member of Friends for more than 3 years and has interests in the natural and cultural resources of the monument. Jim has a BS in Information Technology from DeVry Institute of Technology and a BA in Political Science from California State University – Los Angeles.
Dana Nakase, Secretary
Dana is a student at Arizona State University and brings youth, energy and new perspective to the Board. She enjoys cultural, historical and conservation activities and excels in communications.
’Bri’ Parker-McGlynn, Treasurer
Lura is originally from Pennsylvania, and received a Bachelor of Science in History from Northern Michigan University in Marquette, MI. Lura worked at fire halls, Children’s Museum and a Historical Society, while working on various research projects and developing history programs for children. She is currently employed at Ahwatukee Foothills Prep as a 7th and 8th Grade Social Studies teacher. Lura thoroughly enjoys assisting with projects at non-profit organizations and hopes to be a valuable asset to the Friends organization.
Sarah Striker, Member-at-Large
Sarah graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.A. in anthropology, and received her M.A. and is pursuing a PhD in archaeology from Arizona State University. Sarah has served as Field Crew Chief Cultural Landscapes of Douglas Lake Project, Pellston, MI, has made numerous presentations in the field of archaeology, and has been involved in laboratory research as Research Assistant,
Archaeological Research Institute, Arizona State University.
Jack Johnson, Member-at-Large
Jack is a resident of the Monument’s northern gateway community of Cordes Lakes. He has been a dedicated outdoors man. Jack uses the Monument for recreation and documents and reports damage regularly to the BLM. He also picks up trash every time he’s out on the Monument. Jack works for the Phoenix Fire Department.
Bob Cothern, Member-at-Large
Bob lives in Black Canyon City, the southern gateway community of the Monument. Bob is well known as a tireless worker for his community and the surrounding area. He leads the efforts of the Black Canyon Trail Coalition to develop and complete the nationally recognized Black Canyon National Recreation Trail. Bob also heads the coalition that is working to develop the Black Canyon Heritage Park which will emphasize the history of the area and will include Native American history on the Monument. The visitor center at the Park will also serve as an information center for the Monument.
Staff
Steven L. Brown, AICP, Administrator
Steven joins the Friends as Administrator following service with the Conservancy of Southwest Florida as Environmental Policy Specialsit. Steven is a native of Arizona, born in Phoenix, and a resident of Prescott since 1993. Steven is a professionial Planner with over 25 years in public service and community organizing.
