2025 AFNM BioBlitz
This is an AFNM 25th Anniversary Event
Specific times, locations and detail are being developed in a series of meetings between now and the event. Watch for details. It will take place in different locations at different times over the weekend of May 31st/June 1st.
The event is being overseen by BLM, Arizona Game & Fish, Audubon Society, Friends of the Agua Fria NM and more.
Participants will utilize the iNaturalist app on their cell phones. They should download the app and become familiar with it in advance. It is hoped that we will have an on-line training session beforehand and some experts to advise on site.
The concept is to have citizen scientists observe, photograph and record plants and animals of all species across the monument. Birds, mammals, trees, flowers, cactus, insects, reptiles, fish, whatever. Check out iNaturalist to see what others have recorded. The last time this was done was in May, 2016. You can see the results as a "project" in the app.
If you don't know IDs, there will be experts there to help you.
Update as of Monday, May 12, 2025
To get your name on the list of participants send an email to the BLM Biologist, Damon Haan, at dhaan@blm.gov. Let him know your area of interest (birds, plants, riparian dwellers, etc.), level of expertise, etc.
Also, download the iNaturalist app, sign-in, and join the project, "2025 Agua Fria National Monument BioBlitz". That will allow you to participate by recording your sightings and photos during the event.
Specific meet up times and locations will be announced shortly.
Update as of Friday, May 30, 2025
Tomorrow's the day! The only way to participate is to contact Damon Haan, right now! See 5/12 update above. There are about 40 people participating, most going to different locations. There is NO specific time and place to meet unless Damon assigns one to you. Good luck!
